Comping
We understand that you need to show clients how you intend to use images on fotami.com in a project. You have the ability to create your own lightbox and email it to others in order that they take a closer look at the images you have selected. We also understand that you might right click on an image on the site and save it for use in comping or mock-ups. We allow you to do this (a gentle warning about copyright will pop up when you do so) but you should be aware of what you are allowed to do with a comped image. Comped images can only be used to create materials for proofing presentations to clients. Comped images are not permitted for use in final projects or products, whether for internal or external use.
Copyright FAQs:
Q: Under what circumstances must I purchase a license to use an image from the fotami.com?

Q: What is the maximum number of images I can use?
A: There is no limitation on the number of images you can use. However, if you are using a large number of images, please contact our customer service department at 212/740-8672 or info@slicksurface.com for bulk pricing.
Q: How much does it cost to obtain a license to use an image from fotami.com?

Q: My company/organization is non-profit. Am I required to obtain a license?

Q: I’m not reselling the product in which the fotami.com image will appear. Am I required to obtain a license?
A: Materials containing images from fotami.com that you provide free of charge still require a license.
Q: May I alter, make modifications to, or adapt images in fotami.com?
A: It is permissible to crop images and apply stylistic changes such as blurs, but you are not permitted to make changes, modifications, or alterations to the artwork itself. Q: If I obtain a license to use a fotami.com image, how long is the license good for?
A: Unless otherwise specified in the type of license noted in your Invoice, (e.g. "Web use – 1 year"), a license is granted for one time use only. When you buy a license to print or duplicate up to a certain number copies of an image within your product or project, that number includes reprints. If you wish to print more than the number you purchased a license to print, you would be required to purchase another license. The exception is images sold as "stock" images. Your license to use stock images will never expire.

A: Yes, as long as you first obtain a license from Slicksurface LLC.

A: You must credit either the photographer or fotami.com when you use an image from fotami.com. Web-based credits should include a link to either the image detail page for the image or the home page for fotami.com.
FILE FORMATS AVAILABLE FROM FOTAMI.COM
We have files in several different formats. Use this guide to help you determine the correct the file type for your needs:
High Resolution RAW
Best used for: Image manipulation
Can it be enlarged: Not without losing sharpness
Description:
This is the image as captured by the photographer's camera. These images are not color corrected and must be manipulated using an application such as Adobe Photoshop.
High Resolution TIFF (Created with Adobe Photoshop)
Best used for: Print reproduction
Can it be enlarged: Not without losing sharpness
Description:
This type of image is made up of colored dots known as pixels and is known as a rasterized image. The number of these dots per given space is called the resolution and determines what you can do with the image. The resolution of these images is approximately 300 dots per inch (dpi). This makes it a high-resolution rasterized image and you can expect sharp pictures when you use it for printing so long as you print at the original size or smaller. However, the more you enlarge this type of file, the less clear it will become. This is because the amount of visual information (300 dots per inch) does not increase. For example, if you take an 8" x 10" image that has 300 dots per inch, (2400 X 3000 dots for the entire image), and enlarge it to 16" x 20", the dots are spread out over a larger area resulting in "pixilation."
Low Resolution JPEG (Created with Adobe Photoshop)
Best used for: Web/Internet, CD-ROMs, broadcast and DVDs
Can it be enlarged: Not without losing sharpness
Description:
These files are ideal for Web/Internet, CD-ROM, broadcast, and DVD because the files are small in size and show up quickly on a computer screen. Since the resolution is usually about 72dpi, these are considered low-resolution rasterized images and should not be enlarged nor used for print products.
SEARCHING
General: On most of the pages on fotami.com there is a search box. There are four important things to remember about searching and once you understand these, searching on fotami.com will be a cinch:
- Typing in one or more terms will return results that start with any of the terms you enter. You will likely get a lot of returns with this type of search, but, like all searches on the site, they will be ordered based on the number of matches, so the most relevant will come first.
- Putting double quotes around a single term ("heart") or phrase ("varicose vein") will return results for images that have the exact term or phrase as keywords.
- Putting a + (plus) sign before any term or phrase (e.g. +varicose, or +"varicose vein") will make that term or phrase mandatory.
- Putting a – (minus) sign before any term or phrase will exclude all images with that term.
Examples:
- man walking outdoors
Images that have keywords starting with 'man, 'walking' or 'outdoors'
- man "walking outdoors "
Images that have keywords starting with 'man' or the exact keyword phrase 'walking outdoors'
- man +"walking outdoors "
Images that have the exact keyword phrase 'walking outdoors' (the term 'man' will be used to prioritize the results only)
- -man "walking outdoors "
Images that have the exact keyword phrase 'walking outdoors' but do not have any keywords starting with 'man'
Advanced Search:
Keywords:
Keyword searching in Advanced Search does all of the above for you by automatically adding double quotes, the plus or minus signs to the keywords you type into the search fields.
- The All of These Keywords search feature automatically adds the + sign before each keyword (+heart +attack) and returns images with all of those terms as keywords.
- The Any of These Keywords search feature is the same as typing a single term or phrase into the search box without double quotes, plus signs or minus signs. All images with the term or phrase as a keyword will be returned.
- The Following Phrase search feature automatically adds the double quotes around a phrase ("respiratory muscles") for you and images with that exact phrase as a keyword will be returned.
- The None of These Keywords search feature is best used in conjunction with one of the other search features such as Any of These Keywords. Typing heart vein into the Any of These Keywords search box and cardiac into the None of These Keywords search box will return all images with heart and vein as keywords but exclude cardiac.
